Your Daughter is Dead

Your daughter is dead. There is no use in troubling the teacher…

Those words were probably painful for Jairus. Those words were probably not ideal for Jesus to hear. Troubling Jesus? Healing is no trouble for Jesus. Jairus came to Jesus out of faith, and now someone is saying just leave it alone, your daughter is gone.

I love that Jesus responds by saying, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith, and she will be healed.” It’s so comforting to me. People are saying don’t bother Jesus, and Jesus is saying you’re not bothering me. Just have faith.

You know what I think does bother Jesus? The lack of faith may bother Jesus. Jesus goes to this home and people are weeping. He tells them she’s sleep, not dead. And they laugh at him. In Mark, it says Jesus had them go outside. Why? Because faith is a determining factor in what we believe Jesus can do. Jesus takes the girl by the hand and tells her to get up in a loud voice. Immediately she stood up.

Jesus told Jairus that he should have faith and his daughter would be healed. His daughter was healed, so I’m assuming Jairus had faith.

I don’t know anyone’s situation today. I don’t. But could it be possible that you’ve listened to the crowd say don’t bother Jesus with that? Could it be that you’ve surrounded yourself with people who laugh at the thought of a miracle? Is it time for you to tell some people to get out, so that Jesus can work?

Luke 8:49-55 49 While he was still speaking to her, a messenger arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. He told him, “Your daughter is dead. There’s no use troubling the Teacher now.”50 But when Jesus heard what had happened, he said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith, and she will be healed.”51 When they arrived at the house, Jesus wouldn’t let anyone go in with him except Peter, John, James, and the little girl’s father and mother. 52 The house was filled with people weeping and wailing, but he said, “Stop the weeping! She isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.”53 But the crowd laughed at him because they all knew she had died. 54 Then Jesus took her by the hand and said in a loud voice, “My child, get up!” 55 And at that moment her life returned, and she immediately stood up! Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat.

Mark 5:40 The crowd laughed at him. But he made them all leave, and he took the girl’s father and mother and his three disciples into the room where the girl was lying.
