Learning How to Lean…

We’re taught to believe that leaning on someone isn’t the best thing in the world. If I have to lean on you that means that I’m not strong enough to stand on my own. And I’m scared to lean because of fear that you’ll let me fall. It’s a double-edged sword.

When we think about our human nature, doesn’t it make you happy that God is nothing like us? I literally get thrilled by the comfort I get from knowing God is nothing like me or anyone else. Wouldn’t that be a mess?

When it comes to leaning, God isn’t like people in the world. I was reading a devotional today and it finally registered in my brain how different we are from God. It’s not that I’ve never realized it before, but He sends new subtle ways to show me His differences from time to time.

When it comes to leaning, the opposite is true in this case. With God, if you’re not leaning on Him you are definitely falling. Period. You are no more unsteady in life than when you’re trying to stand on your own apart from God. Don’t kid yourself.

The song says, I’m learning how to lean and depend on Jesus. So if your biggest obstacle is leaning on God, then you do have a big problem. God is the most dependable anything. He is the most complete anything. He is the most fulfilling anything. And if you can’t lean on Him, then what exactly do you think you can do with Him?
