Psalm 1:6 For the Lord watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.
I read this and readily prepared to read on to Chapter 2. Then it hit me, the LORD watches over the path of the godly. To which I said, wait a minute. God, You watch over my path? You watch over the paths of those who are intent on doing Your will?
So, when they said that to me, You were watching? When they did that to me, You were watching? Then why did it have to happen?
Then I continued reading to Chapter 3. David is telling God that his enemies are many, and the people are even saying that God won’t rescue him. But David follows up with this in verses 4 and 5:
I cried out to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy mountain. Interlude
I lay down and slept, yet I woke up in safety, for the Lord was watching over me.
Remember, David is fleeing from his own son at this time! So for us, yes, when they said it, when they did it, God heard it and He saw it. And although we went to bed hurt, maybe brokenhearted, we woke up because God kept us.
It’s hard to say why bad things happen, other than because of sin. I doubt we will ever fully know or understand why things were allowed to take place until we get to Heaven. But I think the point in all of this is to find comfort and peace in the fact that God watches over His children–always. It is in that truth, that we can lay down and wake up knowing we’ve been sustained by God.
