Sin’s Pain

Below is a Psalm about David asking God to remember him. He talks of his sins and his enemies and the heaviness of it all. He ends with a plea to God for help.

Psalm 38:1-8 1 O Lord, don’t rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your rage! 2 Your arrows have struck deep, and your blows are crushing me. 3 Because of your anger, my whole body is sick; my health is broken because of my sins. 4 My guilt overwhelms me— it is a burden too heavy to bear. 5 My wounds fester and stink because of my foolish sins. 6 I am bent over and racked with pain. All day long I walk around filled with grief. 7 A raging fever burns within me, and my health is broken. 8 I am exhausted and completely crushed. My groans come from an anguished heart.21 Do not abandon me, O Lord. Do not stand at a distance, my God. 22 Come quickly to help me, O Lord my savior.

What hits me is the detail in Psalm 38. If you’ve ever been sick like this, you know it’s miserable. But what stands out to me is that David references his sins and guilt with all of this.

To me, this was a description of what sin does not just to our bodies, but our spirit. Sin causes burdens. It festers and stinks. It causes pain and sickness. Why? Because it separates us from God.

But, there is hope as we see in Psalm 38:22.

I don’t know if you know it, but the Savior came. Today, like David, you can confess your sins and invite the Savior to come. And He will come.
