I thought about the phrase “once and for all” this morning. What a powerful idea, right? That something could happen one time and be for the benefit of all.
There is Someone who is the definition of “once and for all.” His name? Jesus. Jesus came here through a virgin birth once. He lived life as a human being once. He suffered and died once. He was buried and resurrected once.
And what’s the next part of that well-known phrase? “And for all.” Jesus lived, died, and resurrected once, and for all of us. It took Jesus one time for all of us. Why won’t we take the time for Him?
John 11:50-52 New Living Translation (NLT)50 You don’t realize that it’s better for you that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.”51 He did not say this on his own; as high priest at that time he was led to prophesy that Jesus would die for the entire nation. 52 And not only for that nation, but to bring together and unite all the children of God scattered around the world.Hebrews 10:10-14 New Living Translation (NLT)10 For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.11 Under the old covenant, the priest stands and ministers before the altar day after day, offering the same sacrifices again and again, which can never take away sins. 12 But our High Priest offered himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins, good for all time. Then he sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand. 13 There he waits until his enemies are humbled and made a footstool under his feet. 14 For by that one offering he forever made perfect those who are being made holy.
