Even though Jesus was God’s Son, He learned obedience from the things He suffered. – Hebrews 5:8
No one wants to hear that! I admit, in my own reading today, I tried to breeze through it. And I could feel a tug saying, “nope, let this sit.”
We like to think about Jesus loving us like crazy. We like to think about His obedience to God giving us salvation. It’s beautiful and it’s a wonderful thought and most importantly truth.
What we likely don’t want to think about is Jesus learning obedience through suffering. We like to think Jesus was just obedient, which He was. But the Bible says even He learned obedience by what He suffered.
See, what makes this hard is that if He learned obedience through suffering, then we learn obedience through suffering as well. Sometimes we don’t mind the submission part. Sometimes we don’t mind a little bit of struggle. Sometimes we’re good with that.
But when we read that even Jesus learned something by going through something, it makes the silver lining just a little less shiny, doesn’t it?
