What is compassion?
By definition it is sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others. By biblical definition it’s even more than that.
Compassion is the heart that helps. (Luke 10:33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion.)
Compassion is the heart that is moved to help those who are lost. (Mark 6:34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.)
Compassion is the neighbor that stops to help. Compassion is the one that picks up the tab out of mercy. (Matthew 18:27 Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.)
What is compassion?
Compassion is the father that waits for his wayward son to come home (Luke 15:20 And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him.).
Compassion is the heart that moves to heal. (Luke7:13-14 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”)
Compassion is what leaves Heaven to come serve on earth. Compassion is what chooses death so that others can have life. Compassion is what moves Jesus to respond. It’s what Jesus does.
